An important distinction to make if you are ever asked out for drinks with David Cameron

I cannot stop chuckling at the fact that a knocking shop named itself after the only remaining "gentlemens' club" not to admit women even as vistors. The difference was apparently that the gentlemens' club was called "White's Club", while "White's Gentlemen's Club" was a gentlemens' club for gentlemen who were no gentlemen. Anyway it's been closed down now, so as you were.

I am now intrigued at what sordid pleasures might be available at the "National Liberal Club", or indeed at any of these (actually I can pretty much guess what the "Cavalry and Guards" is a euphemism for).

Based on the wedding reception I attended there, your guess is probably right.

  2. The Royal Automobile Club surely has a fully-equipped dungeon staffed by German-accented frauleins.

  3. The Naval and Military Club in St James Square is colloquially known as the In and Out. But you knew that of course.

Related: there's a fast food drivethrough chain in the US called In-And-Out Burger, and a popular pastime in rural areas is to get your rifle and shoot out the "B" and the second "r" in "Burger".

  4. @ajay: You're conflating the In-n-Out with the myth of American firearms. In-n-Out was (mostly still is) a Southern California institution; SoCal is (for all its faults) a part of the US that is comparatively poorly-armed and relatively unlikely to spend its spare time shooting at signs. Now, when I was in school (>20 years ago) my classmates would go to the In-n-Out, get bumper stickers (not so many guns, but lots of cars), remove aforesaid B and R, and have a fine In-n-Out Urge sticker suitable for affixing to the surface of your choice.

Of course, In-n-Out is owned by evangelicals, and they've had a redesign sometime since 1990 that made In-n-Out Urge a less-likely modification to their stickers. (I've no idea whether these two things are connected.)

  5. Not that American firearms are a myth; they just don't motivate all aspects of American culture.

  6. I note also that the Savage Club shares premises with the National Liberal Club, either in reference to Gladstone's self-flagellatory habits or perhaps more recent connections.

  7. Anonymous: in my defence I can say that I read this in a William Gibson novel and checked it with a passing Texan, who said that yes, it did happen. Maybe it only happens in Texas.

  8. ajay: Fair enough - no harm done. Just tired of the way as soon as "American" comes up "guns" are soon to follow - as an American living in Britain it's one of the things I hear constantly.

  9. If it happens in Texas, it's quick work - the first In-n-Out only opened in Texas a month ago.

  10. The 9/11 truth is out on the internet.

This is the truth - the WTC was destroyed by 3 underground thermo-nuclear explosions. They were detonated by the US government who used this as an excuse to lead the US and its allies into invading Afghanistan and Iraq. All these wars and deaths were based on a lie.
Will you help to tell this to the world?

  14. And people in Texas do shoot up road signs; I've seen the signs with bullet holes in them.

  15. The National Liberal Club: not just liberal but libertine.

Dunno what you'd do with the Carlton - I think you'd be flogging a dead horse there. And so would they.

  16. Not just Texas, either: I have a collection of pictures of shot-up road signs -- generally shotgun pellets, rather than bullet holes, but I'm happy to assume that there's a diverse distribution that indicates the preferred projectile of a particular regional species of sign-shooter-upper.
