Film Review Corner: This week, "I'm Not There", directed by Todd Haynes

Too much Dylan.

  1. There is no such thing as too much Dylan.

Was Cate Blanchett any good, btw?

  2. Well, she looked quite like Bob Dylan, but to be honest if you've seen the photo then you've seen it. It's hard to judge the voice, because frankly Bob Dylan is the easiest impression in the world now that "Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em" isn't on the telly any more. I wasn't impressed all that much.

  3. Ah, but there's impressions and impressions. You've not seen Bob Dylan done till you've seen him done by John Otway performing I Will Survive as if the great man were doing it.

  4. her cartoon of BD was very sly and funny -- there's a lovely bit where she simply "walks like a man walks" down a corridor towards you, a LOL-moment in a film full of them

(of course the secret name of the film is: "what do we mean when we say 'doing an impression of'?: a study in six parts")

certainly avoid this film if you are not already dylan-convinced: i thought it was enormously entertaining, my favourite haynes so far

  5. I liked Cate B. enormously here, I felt like she was enjoying taking her ego out for a stroll.

As Mrs. D. said, "If you need to go to the bathroom, do it during the Richard Gere parts."

"Far From Heaven" is still my favorite Haynes. Too many stretches in this one felt off-the-rack.
